Convocation at Metropolitan University

The first Convocation of Metropolitan University, Sylhet, was held on 22 April 2010. After seven years of its establishment, the University holds the convocation program in Jalalabad Gas Auditorium, Sylhet, to provide certificates to the graduating students.


The convocation ceremony was presided over by Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, the Education Minister, who graced the program as the representative of the honourable President Md. Zillur Rahman, the Chancellor of the University. Professor Nazrul Islam, Chairman, Universty Grants Commission, Professor Md Abdul Aziz, Vice-chancellor, Metropolitan University, and Badruddin Ahmed Kamran, Mayor, Sylhet City Corporation, were the special guests in the ceremony. The convocation speaker was Dr. Mohammad Farash Uddin, ex-governor, Bangladesh Bank. Dr Towfique Rahman Chowdhury, Chairman, Board of Governors, presented the inaugural speech.


As Chief Guest, the honourable Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said that in the era of globalization students should encompass universal outlook and they should have a vast knowledge for the leadership of the development of country and the world. For this reason taking the help of all types of opportunities from science and technology, they should be transformed into human resources. The present government is working hard to build up a digitalized new generation. The distinguished Minister also said that they have taken steps to establish a new education rule for building technical, moral and true patriots of the country. He added that there is no difference between public universities and private universities. The government is determined to apply modern and standard education for all. For the assurance of discipline and for suitable environment in the private universities, new act is to be passed in the parliament. He feels that all universities will welcome this initiative.


Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid also said that after becoming the education minister he had discussed with everyone for the expansion of education in Sylhet and he had taken various steps. For this reason the ratio of failure decreased. He told that we are getting the positive effect of education in Sylhet. He emphasized on the responsibility of the graduates to work for the country; because it is time to enter into the professional life and they are accountable to the nation and country. They should utilize their merit and quality for enhancing the nation and country.

Honourable Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Badruddin Ahmed Kamran said that the government has declared to open the door of education for all. So, besides public universities, private universities are playing a very significant role. He emphasized that it is the moral responsibility of all graduates to work for the progress of the country. Professor Nazrul Islam, the Chairman of Universty Grants Commission, said that all universities have to give special importance on research for maintaining global standard of education. He also said that the students of private universities are employed at home and abroad. For increasing the percentage of higher education private universities are essential.

In the convocation speech, Professor Mohammad Farash Uddin said that he strongly believes that today’s graduates will prove themselves through success, ability, honesty and humanity. He calls everyone to stay besides the misfortunes in their professional life.

In his speech honourable Vice-chancellor of Metropolitan University, Professor Md Abdul Aziz considered Metropolitan University as a university of third millennium. He also said that our vision is to make the University as a model institution. In the inaugural speech Dr Towfique Rahman Chowdhury, honourable Chairman, Board of Governors said that through their activities Metropolitan University will work hard to find out the root of our nation.The program was anchored by Mr. Fazlul Rabb Tanvir, Rregistrar-in-Charge, Metropolitan University.
